Earlier this week several storms hit Jackson County, MS. One involving a tornado in Moss Point, MS which caused havoc to their buildings, facilities, and schools. “According to Jackson County EMA director Earl Etheridge estimates at least 100 structures were either damaged or destroyed by the storm. While street flooding is an issue in some areas, downed trees, powerlines and other roadway obstructions appear to be among the most repetitive problems”(WLOX).

The Process to Recover from Storm Damage

The first step to start recovering from all the damage that has been caused is to go inspect and document the damages done to your property. Be careful while inspecting for faulty structures and hazards. After documenting all the damages caused, contact your insurance company about the damages. The next step is to register with FEMA for disaster assistance. Lastly, coordinator inspections with professionals for your property and access local resources for repairs.

How to Mitigate Storm Damage in the Future

There are several preventative measures that you can take to minimize the damage done to your property by tornadoes. One of the most important measures to perform routinely is to trim the trees that hang over or nearby your roof. After trimming your tree limbs, make sure to clear out any debris from your gutters. Another measure you can take is to secure your outdoor furniture or to take it inside. If you have already been impacted by previous storms, make sure that you get a professional out to inspect your roof for any damages.

Prevent Roof Damage from Storms

A preventative measure that you could take to protect your roof is to invest in a high wind rated shingle, like TAMKO Titan. The typical shingle has a wind rating of 110mph to 130mph depending on if it is a standard application or a special application. However, when TAMKO Titan is installed with 6 nails (special application) it has a wind warranty of 160 mph! In addition, TAMKO Titan shingles are Impact Resistant, Class 3. Which means the shingle can withstand a 1 ¾-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet without breaking. They do this to replicate the impact of hail raining down on your roof.
